Fall Picnics in California: Where to Go & What to Pack

There’s something special about California in the fall. While autumn in other parts of the country means fiery foliage and crisp mornings, (and we don’t even dare to compare California with New England fall), here in the Golden State, fall reveals itself with a subtler charm. The vineyards blush with harvest colors, the beaches calm after the busy summer rush, and afternoons carry the perfect balance of warmth and breeze.

As the heat of summer fades, cooler air is inviting us for more outdoor activities. It’s the ideal weather for a picnic.

Why Fall is Picnic Season in California

Summer picnics may get all the attention here, but truthfully, autumn is the best time to spread out a blanket and enjoy the outdoors. In California, September through November is our sweater weather – when the weather cools just enough to be comfortable—sunny days without the scorching heat, and breezy, cooler evenings when we can finally get to wear a sweater.

By now, tourists are gone. We finally get our beaches back, and we can enjoy a glass of wine, watching the sun going down over a picnic.

Where to Picnic

California’s geography gives you endless options for a fall picnic. Depending on your mood, you can head toward the coast, the vineyards, the mountains, or even a city park. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Coastal California: Coastal towns are less crowded this time of year, making seaside picnics feel private and romantic, where the salty breeze pairs perfectly with a cozy spread and a bottle of wine.
  • Wine Country: Napa and Sonoma are at their most beautiful in fall. The harvest is in full swing, the vineyards glow in shades of amber and burgundy, and the air carries the faintest hint of crushed grapes. Many wineries allow picnics on their grounds, making it the ultimate wine-country experience.
  • Parks and Gardens: If you’re staying local, California’s parks and botanical gardens are at their best in cooler weather. From San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park to Los Angeles’ Descanso Gardens, these spots offer a serene, charming setting without the summer crowds.
  • Mountain Getaways: In Lake Tahoe or Big Bear, fall brings crisp mountain air and early touches of foliage. A picnic here means layering up, sipping something warm, and feeling completely tucked away from the bustle of everyday life.

What to Pack

Part of the beauty of a picnic lies in its simplicity. Cozy, layers, and seasonal flavors are synonymous to fall. So make sure you bring with you:

  • A crusty baguette with brie or blue cheese
  • Fresh figs, pears, or apples, and more cheese
  • Cured meats like prosciutto or salami
  • Olives, roasted nuts, and honey
  • Some mulled cider, to check all the fall musts
  • And of course, a bottle of California wine—whether a Pinot Noir from Sonoma or a crisp Chardonnay from Santa Barbara

Don’t forget the little details that make it feel special: cloth napkins instead of paper, a proper corkscrew, maybe even a bouquet of flowers tucked into the basket. It’s all about elevating a simple moment into something unforgettable.

A picnic is more than just outdoor dining. It’s about slowing down and creating a moment of connection—with nature, with your surroundings, with the people you’re with. In a world that often feels rushed, there’s something deeply grounding about spreading a blanket, sharing a bite with a friend, savoring a glass of wine, and enjoying the moment.

Tips for the Perfect Fall Picnic in California

To make the most of your picnic date, keep these simple tips in mind:

  1. Check the weather: Even in California, fall can surprise you with breezy afternoons or cooler evenings. Bring a light sweater and a blanket.
  2. Pick your timing: Late afternoon is ideal—warm enough to be comfortable, with golden hour light arriving just as you open the wine.
  3. Bring your camera with you: Whether you’re a professional photographer or an amateur taking waaay too many pictures with your phone, make sure your device is fully charged, so you can capture the golden light.
  4. Choose comfort: A large blanket, pillows, or even a folding chair can turn a quick meal into a great experience overall.
  5. Pack light but thoughtful: You don’t need a full charcuterie board; (unless you’re planning a content shoot with your girlies). A few seasonal items, and this short list will do it.
  6. Leave no trace: We are so grateful for living in the most beautiful state, and we try to keep it the best place that it is. So please, bring reusable items, and clean after yourself when you’re done.

As the days shorten and California shifts into its quieter season, a picnic outdoors is the perfect way to embrace fall. It doesn’t require much—just a little preparation, an appreciation for the setting and the outdoors, and the willingness to slow down. Whether you’re sipping wine in Napa, watching the sun dip into the Pacific, or simply enjoying a sandwich in your local park with your dog, have fun with it.

So, grab a basket, invite a friend, and head outdoors. In California, sweater-weather is picnic-weather!!!
