Every December for the past 44 years, as winter settles over the rocky coastline of southern Maine, the charming town of Kennebunkport is home to Christmas Prelude.
This New England’s beloved nearly two-week long Christmas celebration has gained popularity beyond the region, gathering visitors from all over the country. HGTV has named Kennebunkport the #2 Christmas Town in America. And according to Country Living, it’s one of the Top 20 Christmas family vacation destinations in the world!!!
Christmas Prelude began in 1982, when a few local shop owners got together for a tree lighting, celebrating their small community. Little did they know that it’ll quickly become a defining part of the town’s identity. Today, the festival spans dozens of events, all organized by the volunteer-run Kennebunkport Business Association. Yet despite its growth, Prelude remains rooted in the same authenticity and community spirit that sparked it more than four decades ago.
This year’s Prelude will run from December 4 to December 14, hosting tons of events. Here are a few highlights you don’t wanna miss.
The Iconic Dock Square Tree Lighting
One of the most beloved events of the season: the towering tree in Dock Square bursts into light while the crowd sings along with local choirs.
Santa’s Arrival by Lobster Boat
Perhaps the most iconic Prelude tradition is Santa cruising down the Kennebunk River on a decked-out lobster boat.
But Saturday, December 6 is one of Prelude’s most festive days — a blend of cheerful celebrations, community traditions, and coastal holiday magic. A few highlights include:
The Hat Parade (3:00 PM)
A joyful procession of families, children, and holiday enthusiasts wearing festive, whimsical hats. Led by the lively Fife & Drum Duo, the parade winds through Dock Square and ends at the historic Washington Hose Company.
Candlelight Caroling at the Monastery (6:30 PM)
When evening settles in, the Franciscan Monastery becomes the backdrop for one of Prelude’s most nostalgic moments, as everyone gathers in singing Christmas carols.

What to Know (and Plan) Before You Go
- Book your stay months in advance. The Prelude is one of the busiest times in Kennebunkport, so make sure to book lodging early on. Hotels and inns tend to fill up fast. So, if you’re traveling from out of state, consider reserving a room well ahead of time.
- It’s busy — and parking is limited. Because so many events are tightly packed into a small village area, parking can be scarce. If you don’t have lodging downtown, plan to arrive early or consider using shuttle services where available.
- Dress for the weather — and bring warm layers. December in coastal Maine can be brisk, especially after dark. Be sure to bundle up, wear layers, and bring weather-proof shoes.
